TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) bars are high-strength reinforcement steel bars used in concrete structures. They get their name from a special manufacturing process in which the hot rolled bar passes through a water-cooled quenching box immediately after rolling – which gives the bar a tough, hardened outer rim and a softer, more ductile inner core.
The result is a reinforcement bar that combines two properties that are normally in tension with each other: high strength on the outside (so it resists tensile load), and high ductility on the inside (so it can bend, flex and absorb earthquake energy without cracking).
| Grade | Yield Strength | Standard | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fe 500 | 500 MPa min | IS 1786:2008 | Residential & commercial construction |
| Fe 500D | 500 MPa min | IS 1786 (D = Ductile grade) | Earthquake-prone zones, premium construction |
| Fe 550D | 550 MPa min | IS 1608, IS 1786 & IS 1599 | High-rise construction, infrastructure, bridges, PSU tenders |
The quenching technology used to produce TMT bars determines the bar’s performance – which is why Apple Industries Limited chose the German H&K Thermex Quenching Box line.
Thermex is the original tempcore-style quenching technology, and the H&K Thermex Box is one of the most precision-engineered implementations available. It produces TMT bars with:
Every Apple Industries Limited TMT bar – Fe 500, Fe 500D and Fe 550D – is produced on this line. The quality is not a function of which batch you order. It is a function of how the plant is built.
Apple Industries Limited produces TMT bars in 8 standard diameters – from 8 mm to 32 mm.
Special sizes can be discussed for bulk orders. Standard lengths and tolerances comply with IS 1786.
Foundations, columns, beams and slabs for residential and commercial buildings. Recommended: Fe 500, Fe 500D
Dams, flyovers, highways, tunnels and metro projects. Recommended: Fe 550D
Apple Industries Limited TMT bars reach the project site through three buyer channels:
Procurement options:
Both grades have a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa. The ‘D’ in Fe 500D stands for ‘Ductile’ – meaning the bar has tighter elongation and bendability specifications. Fe 500D is specifically engineered for earthquake-prone zones and premium construction where a small additional safety margin matters. Both grades are produced by Apple Industries Limited under BIS Licence CM/L-6600091814.
Fe 550D is a higher-strength TMT grade with a minimum yield strength of 550 MPa – 10% higher than Fe 500. Combined with the ductile (D) specification, it is the preferred grade for high-rise construction, large infrastructure projects, PSU tenders, and any project where reducing rebar weight per tonne of construction matters. Apple Industries Fe 550 and Fe 550D are third-party certified per IS 1608 (Part 1), IS 1786 and IS 1599 by V2 Civil Diagnostic Pvt Ltd.
For most residential construction in India, Fe 500 or Fe 500D TMT bars are the right specification. They offer the correct balance of strength, ductility, weldability and cost – and meet all relevant Indian building code requirements. Use Fe 500D specifically if the project is in an earthquake-prone zone. Apple Industries produces both grades to BIS standards.
The minimum order quantity is 25 tonnes. Standard lead time from order confirmation to dispatch is 24 hours. Transport arrangement can be coordinated based on customer requirement.
